Project:Schools for the Himalaya

A program linking schools in Australia with schools in the Everest region of Nepal

The Schools for the Himalaya program aims to improve both teaching and learning by providing funds for the on-going needs of schools. This is where your school may help.

Our Schools for the Himalaya program aims to link a particular school in the mountains of Nepal with at least one Australian school. We shall provide the background material (for example, photos, details about the region, the number and ages of students enrolled in the school) so that your school can identify with the particular school in Nepal. With these details we hope that your students will feel inspired to raise funds for the Nepalese students.

The funds raised will be used to address the specific needs of each school, in Nepal itself. The materials may include teaching materials, stationery, or help with the physical environment and maintenance of the school.  Purchase of materials locally helps to support the Nepalese economy as well as ensuring the materials are appropriate.

In November 2007 a survey of the first cluster of schools in the Lower Solu-Khumbu (Everest) region of Nepal was completed.  Since then we have been linking Australian schools with Nepalese schools identified from this review.

Outcomes

Our aim is to ensure a long term relationship between your school and a specific school in Nepal. We would hope for a minimum three-year support cycle. During this time there will be ample opportunities to forge a relationship with the students in Nepal, exchanging images, letters and news. You will be informed as to how your funds are being spent. In the long term it might even result in a group of your students (together with teachers and parents) visiting Nepal and trekking to your school. The Australian International School in Singapore trekked to the school they are supporting at Loding in December, 2007.

Fundraising

Whatever funds your school raises will make a difference in the education of Nepalese children. For example, in the mountain village of Thating the children are unable to play games during their breaks from the classroom. The land is available but there are no funds for the necessary excavation of the steep hillside.

It is also possible for two or three schools to be linked to a Nepalese school in Nepal, so that small schools in Australia are able to participate.

Want to make a difference to a Nepalese child’s future?
