What we do
Local context
Life on the edge
Imagine you are a child and you turn up to a school that has no desks, paper or books - or maybe you have to learn outside because an earthquake damaged your school and it’s no longer safe to sit inside. Now imagine you are older, pregnant with your first child, and about to give birth at home without help because the nearest health centre is an eight hour walk away. You also live in the Himalaya, often referred to as the world’s Third Pole. The changing climate is leading to increasing forest fires and floods, posing a growing threat to communities and livelihoods.
We believe that everyone deserves access to quality education and healthcare and a stable environment. People in the remote Himalaya should be able to pursue their potential - no matter their circumstances. Since 2002, we have worked in partnership with local organisations to design and deliver cost-effective and practical programs that help remote Himalayan families withstand serious challenges such as poverty, injustice and natural disasters.
Quality education
Over the years, significant strides have been made in increasing access to education, particularly for girls and marginalised communities in the Himalaya. However, to truly set kids up for a brighter future, we’re focusing on elevating the quality of education students receive.
Accessible healthcare
Good physical and mental health provide a solid foundation for helping individuals and communities lead fulfilling and productive lives. Investing in health across the Himalaya is not just a matter of providing essential care—it's about bridging the gap and fostering resilience in often underserved communities.
Thriving environments
Without a stable environment, the basic conditions necessary for life in the Himalaya are compromised, threatening survival and well-being. We are committed to building resilient communities and ecosystems in these fragile regions, enabling them to sustain their traditional ways of life and effectively adapt to evolving challenges.
Cultural heritage
The Himalaya has a rich cultural heritage and a wealth of traditional art forms, providing deep insights into the philosophies that influence life in the region. The AHF Himalayan Art Award provides support for emerging artists who would otherwise struggle to find the resources to express their talent.
Himalayan NGOs
Local partnerships
All of our programs are designed and delivered with organisations on the ground in the Himalaya who know the communities, cultures and complexities best. For over 20 years, we have worked together on relevant, localised solutions that deliver lasting change to vulnerable families. Additionally, all of our partners have capacity strengthening plans that enable them to have greater impact. Our role is to help to build resilience and opportunities for our development partners and the people we serve.
